Tucson Museum of Art Gala

This year, Tucson Museum of Art’s annual Gala will be held in the Kasser Family Wing of Latin American! This expansion to the museum was made possible by the largest individual donor gift in TMA’s history. The new wing will exhibit pre-Columbian and Latin American art.

The evening will start off at 5 p.m., with a social hour of enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while perusing and bidding on silent auction items. A live auction will be held at 6:15 p.m., followed by dinner catered by Carte Blanche Catering.

Special guests will include Los Angeles artist Patrick Martinez and Phoenix-based Monica Aissa Martinez, who were chosen the 2020-21 Kasser Family Wing Inaugural Artists. Patrick Martinez’s exhibit “Falling Empire,” will open Oct. 2, and was influenced by urban culture and the Hip Hop movement. “Nothing in Stasis,” an exhibition of work by Monica Aissa Martinez, will open April 2, 2021.

The vision for the new 6000-square-foot expansion is the enhancement of the museum’s ability to serve the community and visitors by unifying the main museum building with the John K. “Jack” Goodman Pavilion, increasing exhibition space, expanding opportunities to present extraordinary works of pre-Columbian and Latin American art, as well as contemporary interpretations.

Asian Lantern Festi

Colorful and colossal Chinese lantern displays will light up Reid Park Zoo during their Asian Lantern Festival. In China, the Lantern Festival is one of the country’s most important events, tracing back to the Han Dynasty more than 2,000 years ago! Tucson’s version of this immersive cultural experience will feature lanterns, authentic music, dance and acrobatic performances, as well as Asian-inspired foods, Pan-Asian arts and interactive activities.

More than 400 colorful, interactive, customized lanterns will be on display, and 80 percent will be different from last year. Immense by day and dazzling by night, the lanterns will feature scenes from Chinese folklore and legend to whimsical settings, to groups of largerthan- life zoo animals and fantasy creatures.

Presented in partnership with Tianyu Arts & Culture, Inc., UA Global and the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center, the event started Feb. 13, running Thursday through Sunday, but it becomes nightly starting Mar. 5.
