Letter from the ABC of Alabama Chairman

In March, I had the privilege of attending ABC National’s Annual Convention in Las Vegas with Past Chairman Mark Mattox of Robin & Morton. This convention was special because we were awarded the Strategic Plan Chapter Performance Award for the first time in our chapter’s history. There is no question in my mind that without Mark’s leadership, this would not have happened.
Mark’s leadership fostered an environment that encouraged our Executive Committee and other Board members to work harder, commit to leadership and buy into a forward-thinking plan for our organization. From day one, Mark was dedicated to impacting our industry, communities and policymakers by developing a detailed, goal-oriented plan to advance our industry.
ABC National President and CEO Mike Bellaman praised our chapter’s efforts, saying, “Congratulations to the 2024 winner of the ABC Strategic Plan Chapter Performance Award, ABC Alabama. Established in 2019, the award recognizes the all-around top-performing chapter in achieving the annual objectives in the association-wide five-year strategic plan and outperforming 66 other chapters in the long-range goals related to membership, political advocacy, total human health and workforce development.”
In 2024, under Mark’s leadership, we laid the groundwork that led to this recognition. I completely agree with Mark’s assessment that “we met as a Board to establish our agenda and action plan for the year. We established lofty goals and put tremendous work and effort throughout the year into achieving or exceeding those goals. The hard work and long hours of so many paid huge dividends — we surpassed our membership, political action, safety and workforce development goals. We also had fun.”
This award is a tremendous honor, but most importantly, it signifies our chapter’s commitment to developing and executing detailed long-term plans. In our industry, we are measured by delivering tangible results, and this award is given based on measurable goals, high standards and challenging demands.
The five-year annual strategic planning process facilitates the leadership and execution of ABC’s purpose and objectives. Since its inception, ABC has significantly improved on key metrics association-wide, in some cases by more than 1,000 percent. Organizational alignment has been the catalyst for our transformational performance.
Thank you, Mark, for your leadership, commitment and vision. Because you set clear goals and developed a detailed plan, our industry, our members and our community are better today than they were yesterday.
