The New Toole Family Memory Center
The Toole Family Memory Center at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute officially opens its doors in May 2020, but already is making an impact in Alzheimer’s and dementia care in Tucson.
The memory center is a part of the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, an international leader in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. As part of the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, the Tucson center supports the three-part mission to: end Alzheimer’s without losing another generation; set a new national standard of patient and family care; and forge new models of collaboration in biomedical research.
The memory center is named for the Toole family of Tucson, who donated $5 million to the Banner Alzheimer’s Foundation to bring the institution’s renowned care model to Southern Arizona. The 10,000-square-foot facility is located at the southeastern corner of North Hacienda del Sol Road and East River Road and is conveniently located to serve the comprehensive needs of area residents and collaborate closely with community partners.
The center will collaborate with University of Arizona Health Sciences researchers and the physicians at Banner – University Medicine. It will offer a comprehensive range of services for affected patients and families, conduct groundbreaking treatment and prevention studies, and expand research in the study of these conditions.
The center will provide the following outpatient services and resources:
Evaluation, diagnosis and medical management of cognitive and memory problems;
Clinical trials programs, where patients can learn about and gain access to promising investigational treatments and prevention research;
Family and community services programs to help address commonly unmet non-medical needs of family and patient care;
Community education programs.
The center’s inaugural director, Allan A. Anderson, M.D., is an experienced leader, researcher and provider. An expert in dementia care, Dr. Anderson has a track record of developing and incorporating innovative dementia care practice models in outpatient memory clinics and for specialized assisted living dementia programs. He is a strong proponent of a team approach to Alzheimer’s and dementia care, which includes training interdisciplinary teams to deliver care and understanding to address the needs of Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and their family members.
As director, Dr. Anderson also is working to create and implement education and training programs to expand the number of Alzheimer’s- and dementia-trained health care workers to deliver more cost-effective care. He is leading the development and implementation of cutting-edge research projects at the Tucson center to make major contributions to the scientific study, treatment and prevention of memory and other cognitive disorders.
Banner Alzheimer’s Institute in Tucson is made possible through generous philanthropic support to the Banner Alzheimer’s Foundation. The programs and services created to support those with memory impairment at Banner’s memory centers throughout the state also are funded by the foundation and its donors.
