ASID Design Excellence Awards, Arizona South Chapter The Arizona South Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) recently held its annual competition among its members to encourage and reward design excellence. ASID is the largest group of professional interior designers in the Tucson area. Each entry (from a project completed within the past two years) included a written design statement, floor plans and professional photographs. Five independent designers from across the country juried this year’s competition. Tucson Lifestyle Home & Garden is proud to present the winning entries. First Place Residential Space Over 2500 Square Feet Lori Carroll, ASID, IIDA, NKBA Member Lori Carroll & Associates Photography by William Lesch Following a devastating fire, two empty-nesters choose style over practicality when replacing their furnishings. With their children gone, the homeowners had more time to relax and enjoy their home. They requested a casual but indulgent style, and splurged on high-end materials and finishes. The designer incorporated items salvaged from the fire in the overall design, creating a look that is comfortably livable yet refined and sophisticated. Second Place Residential Space Over 2500 Square Feet Liz Ryan, Allied ASID Liz Ryan Design Photography by William Lesch This new construction home was designed to be the client’s sanctuary and retreat from their busy lives in the Midwest. The golf course lot, tucked into the foothills, was just the location to build their dream home. The architect included large window walls that opened to a gracious patio. Highly textured finishes in a neutral desert palette were selected by the designer to blur the lines between the indoors and out. Accent colors in warm tones were used throughout for added interest and pop. Third Place Residential Space Over 2500 Square Feet Emilee Weine, Allied ASID MLE Direction & Design, Inc. Photography by Robin Stancliff This semi-circular bar, built with flagstone cut on site, creates an area for the glass-front display cabinets above the sink, wine fridge and dishwasher drawers, located on the wall side of the bar. The fireplace was updated with flagstone and a linear cherry mantel. Grays and pale blues in the silk rug and tiles at the bar coordinate with the sofas in the adjoining space. First Place Residential Space Under 2500 Square Feet Pamela Portwood, Allied ASID, LEED AP Greener Lives LLC Photography by Robin Stancliff In re-imagining this 1920s home with elements of a 1950s remodel, areas had to be removed to take advantage of the 825-square-foot space. The clients wanted a modern style and a sustainable space. No-VOC paint, Energy Star appliances, Water Sense fixtures, dualflush toilet, Greenguard-certified quartz countertops and flooring with recycled content were used throughout. Glass, metal and leather furniture defined the contemporary look. First Place Residential Specialty Space Lori Carroll, ASID, IIDA, NKBA Member Lori Carroll & Associates Photography by William Lesch A couple of wine connoisseurs requested an exciting wine room for their dream vacation home. They wanted something different than the heavy Mediterranean look — something more simple and refined. Glass, wood, stone and metal were used throughout the room’s interior. The room features ample bottle capacity, constant and correct temperature, LED lighting to highlight the bottles without generating heat, and two different racking options. Second Place Residential Specialty Space Sandra Nance, ASID Arizona Designs Kitchens and Baths, LLC Photography by Jeffrey Volker The challenge for this project was to create a wheelchair-friendly gourmet cook’s kitchen. Physical constraints were addressed, such as the turning radius of the wheelchair and not having wall-mounted, highreach storage. Retro-style stainless cabinetry gave the designer the ability to adjust the height of the base cabinet support legs to clear the front wheels of his chair. Oiled white beech countertops complete the look. Third Place Residential Specialty Space Emilee Weine, Allied ASID MLE Direction & Design, Inc. Photography by Robin Stancliff The clients requested that a wine room be created in a lower level garage storage area for their increasing stock. Rich green granite countertops coordinate with the wine bottles and are used to supply surfaces for wine to be opened and sorted near the sink. Dual controlled and monitored thermostat keeps wine at a constant temperature. Cork flooring completes the contemporary but classic look of this newly created room. First Place Singular Residential Space Lori Carroll, ASID, IIDA, NKBA Member Lori Carroll & Associates Photography by William Lesch The designer emphasized the significant architectural features in the dining area. Elevated above the main floor, “suede” travertine slab and marble mosaics create an engaging stairway that draws the eye upward. A customized iron chandelier highlights the space while also drawing attention to the ceiling architecture. A wood plank table, sculptural hall chairs and long flowing draperies complement the color scheme and fit the space to perfection. Second Place Singular Residential Space Terri Taylor, ASID, IIDA, IDS, IFDA and Edith Villalobos- Zamora, Allied ASID Taylor Design Group Photography by Robin Stancliff A 1980s home with great bones and amazing views, had a floor plan that chopped up the available space. The designer created an open concept throughout the home. Only the cast bronze front doors, stone fireplace and washed oak ceilings were kept. New floors of pale washed oak and travertine set the tone for furnishings in a soft, pale aqua and ivory color scheme. Third Place Singular Residential Space Liz Ryan, Allied ASID Liz Ryan Design Photography by William Lesch This newly constructed home is situated in a dramatic mountain setting. The designer was inspired to create a space that represented the best of a destination resort combined with the clients’ own personal touches. Rustic and highly textured finishes blend with casually elegant furnishings. Continuity throughout the home is achieved using similar palettes, fabrics and finishes. High ceilings are accented with hand-hewn beams. First Place Large Kitchens Janice O’Brien, CKD, Allied ASID Arizona Designs Kitchens and Baths, LLC Photography by Jeffrey Volker This kitchen remodel in a hacienda-style home worked to fix an unfortunate dropped ceiling, even lower ductwork soffit and structural post. It also unified the design with the adjoining family room, which featured lovely wood/ beam ceilings and a dramatic view of an award-winning backyard. Golden Ridge granite breaks up the “distressed leather” finish on the cabinetry. Pot lights and under-cabinet LED lighting help the kitchen glow. Second Place Large Kitchens Lori Carroll, ASID, IIDA, NKBA Member Lori Carroll & Associates Photography by William Lesch This custom home’s kitchen needed an influx of style and function. The layout had to be reconfigured for better flow and for entertaining. New custom cabinetry and pro-style appliances were incorporated in a traditional style with a modern twist. Finding inspiration for the color palette came from the surrounding landscape. Iridescent touches resulted in a more aesthetically appealing space. Third Place Large Kitchens Sandra Nance, ASID Arizona Designs Kitchens and Baths, LLC Photography by Jeffrey Volker The remodel of this 1990s home required removing the dated kitchen décor. A new plan greatly expanded the usable space in the room, placing a center island as a dramatic focal point. Storage for garbage, drawers for pots and pans, and flexible shelf storage was added around the island. A table with built-in storage, a USB receptacle and drawers were added. First Place and Best of Show Small Kitchens Janice O’Brien, CKD, Allied ASID Arizona Designs Kitchens and Baths, LLC Photography by Jeffrey Volker The kitchen in this mid-century home was very small and had a low, eight-foot ceiling, adding to the claustrophobic feeling. The homeowners wanted to open the room to the adjoining living space and vault the ceiling, if possible. Old plaster was removed, exposing the red brick walls. Steel-faced cabinetry and white counters added to the industrial-chic look. Stainless floating shelves display their set of Frank Lloyd Wright dinnerware. Second Place Small Kitchens Sandra Nance, ASID Arizona Designs Kitchens and Baths, LLC Photography by Jeffrey Volker The cabinetry in this 1950s kitchen had inaccessible areas, limiting storage. The refrigerator had to be moved because it partially blocked a door. The new kitchen features a corner cabinet with hardware that swings out to become a pantry. After reconfiguring the entire layout for maximum use, storage also was extended to the ceiling. Built-in seating and table, dimmable LED lighting in recessed cans and a third layer of strip lighting was tucked under the cabinets. First Place Large Bathrooms Sandra Nance, ASID Arizona Designs Kitchens and Baths, LLC Photography by Jeffrey Volker The existing master bath was awkwardly arranged, provided little storage and blocked off the shower from natural light. A large, unused garden tub wasted space in the center of the room. New slab-front vanities and modern sconces were added to flank the glass block window, and a dressing table was positioned in the center. The shower was enlarged, a bench added, and a vertical tile design echoes the design in the vanity area. Second Place Large Bathrooms Lori Carroll, ASID, IIDA, NKBA Member Lori Carroll & Associates Photography by William Lesch The clients requested a master bath re-do for this 1999 home, emphasizing the natural surroundings. A glass block divider was removed, and existing windows were enlarged. A neutral color scheme, rich wood tones and stone are all indicative of their desert lifestyle. Unique tile designs and custom cabinetry offer a serene but sophisticated look. A revised lighting plan helped to eradicate shadows in the vanity mirrors. Third Place Large Bathrooms Patricia Mooney, ASID Designlines Interior Design Photography by Robin Stancliff A love for the Hawaiian Island’s influenced the choices that the clients made for the finishes in this bath remodel. The original bath was outdated, with a tiny shower. The closet access to the main bath was closed off to add more shower wall space. The shower re-do included soap niches, bench, body sprays, hand held shower and a pebble floor. The back-to-back mirrors were kept from the original design. First Place Small Bathrooms Liz Ryan, Allied ASID Liz Ryan Design Photography by Zach Hewlett The former finishes in this hall bath were removed to accommodate the clients’ request for a more organic contemporary look to match the rest of their home. The existing saltillo tile was retained. Sleek plumbing fixtures and stone tile detail of the backsplash and shower surround echoes that in the kitchen, which is adjacent to the bath. The walls were retextured with a smooth finish. Updated ventilation and recessed lighting were added. Second Place Small Bathrooms Emilee Weine, Allied ASID MLE Direction & Design, Inc. Photography by Robin Stancliff The bold lines of the trough-style double sink blend cleanly with the granite-topped drawers of the vanity. Glass panels spanning from the tub to ceiling enclose the wet area. The tub surround is wrapped in copper quartzite in a pinwheel design punctuated with accent tile to add interest to this featured wall. A granite seat with full shelf above was created at the vanity end of the tub. The original brick floors were kept. First Place Outdoor Living Space Lori Carroll, ASID, IIDA, NKBA Member Lori Carroll & Associates Photography by William Lesch To capitalize on the home’s amazing mountain views, the designer aimed toward creating a luxury resort experience. An alfresco dining area was arranged adjacent to the house with beautiful vistas across the pool. Furniture with high-tech material and aluminum frames withstand the sun, while a custom fire feature adds warmth and a dramatic focal point for chilly nights. The copper bowls stylishly separate the dining area and pool. Second Place Outdoor Living Space Liz Ryan, Allied ASID Liz Ryan Design Photography by William Lesch The placement of this new home takes advantage of mountain, city and golf course views. Classic Southwest hues, finishes and textures were blended with contemporary architectural details. Furniture arrangement, style and color were kept simple to avoid competing with the views. Pops of terra cotta, gold and copper draw the eye from the half-moon sectional to the chaise lounges by the pool. Third Place Outdoor Living Space Patricia Mooney, ASID Designlines Interior Design Photography by Jeff Volker The desire to have a pizza oven drove the decision to renovate this formerly unused space. It had no overhang to protect from the oven, seating and garden. The revised space complements the Santa Fe architecture but still maintains an Italian influence. Added to the Pizza Courtyard were a Bocce court, all-weather ambience and task lighting, and a tortoise enclosure. First Place Residential Product Design Lori Carroll, ASID, IIDA, NKBA Member Lori Carroll & Associates Photography by William Lesch The front entry to a home is one of its most important features. For this grand 7,000-square-foot home, the designer needed to create an equally grand double door. Surrounding the entrance, concrete pavers trimmed with pre-cast molding were precision cut to form niches. Naturally warm walnut travertine was the perfect complement to the forged black iron of the doors. Second Place Residential Product Design Terri Taylor, ASID, IIDA, IDS, IFDA Taylor Design Group Photography by Robin Stancliff To maintain the light source for the walk-in shower but provide privacy without using glass block, the designer commissioned a beautiful stained-glass window inspired by a tapestry in the owner’s collection. The art glass is sandwiched between a storefront window on the outside for protection and a glass panel on the inside that is set flush to the surrounding tile, making it easy to clean and maintain.
