LEFT The integration of interior and exterior spaces makes the home feel larger, and also knits the desert into the home. Features include optimum solar orientation and sun shading, xeriscape gardening, water harvesting, and energy-efficient LED lighting throughout.

BELOW The choices of materials, muted color palette and open plan offer a perfect backdrop for the homeowners’ artwork collections.

Courtyards House

Conceived as a series of interlocking interior and exterior spaces, the living areas of the home contain — or are contained by — six individual courtyards. Spatial boundaries are defined, yet fluid, with light, views and access flowing from one part of the home to the next. Each courtyard is distinctly xeriscaped with Southern Arizona specimens.

The Courtyards House also serves as a gallery for the clients’ collection of paintings and photographs by Tucson artists.

Two pilots, who fly between Arizona and Alberta, Canada, contacted Ibarra Rosano Design Architects to create an open, modern home in a typical neighborhood. The home maximizes sunlight in a compact footprint, making use of space and natural light

LEFT Concrete, metal with rust finishes and windows are consistently used on the home’s façade. The vertical centerpiece adds visual interest.

ABOVE A pop of color highlights the kitchen area, which is filled with storage.

RIGHT Modern furnishings and built-ins augment the open floor plan and sleek design

A view from the kitchen highlights the homeowners’ art and midcentury modern style.
