LIVING UNITED Spring 2012 Living United Fall 2011 : IFC
2 FALL 2011 In preparing my first letter as the new chair of United Way’s Board of Directors, I couldn’t help but reflect on the 47 Rochesterians who have held this important role in our community before me. From United Way’s founder and first board chair, George Eastman, to my direct predecessor, friend and colleague Tom Hubbard, every volunteer who helped lead this organization held one common goal—do the most good to help the most people. In its 93-year history, both United Way and the community we work for have experienced profound change. What hasn’t changed is our collective commitment to making Rochester a vibrant place to live. Your commitment helped United Way surpass our goal for the 2011 campaign and raise $28,128,972 to help all of Greater Rochester. Thank you for your continued support. Your gift makes an impact all year long. We raised more than $17.8 million for United Way’s Community Fund to support nearly 80 critical programs that help thousands of people in our community. Over my two-year tenure as chair, I’m sure we’ll see more change and, as Winston Churchill said, “There is nothing wrong with change, if it is in the right direction.” There is no single cause of the problems our community faces, and there is no single solution. Throughout our entire community, there is work to be done: work to help children fulfill their promise, work to help our elderly and disabled live independent lives, work to ensure that no one goes without basic needs like food, shelter and clothing. I’m confident that together we can get this work done to make great change—in the right direction—for Rochester. We choose to support United Way’s work because we believe that we’re more powerful as a group than as individuals. I plan to continue making change for Rochester, and invite you to join me on this journey, working together for the greater good. For everyone who came before us—for our friends, family and neighbors, and for Rochester’s future—let’s keep this change rolling. “ I’M CONFIDENT THAT TOGETHER WE CAN GET THIS WORK DONE TO MAKE GREAT CHANGE.” David L.
