LAKELAND DREADNAUGHTS GEORGE JENKINS EAGLES RICK RUNION | THE LEDGER PAUL JOHNSON | THE LEDGER LAKELANDRETURNS JUST SEVEN STARTERS this season and will need big things fromnew starters likeWR Teddy Wright (5) and QB Tim Evans (15). The defense has just four returning starters, among themDB KareemGivens (30) and DL Demarco Gandy (34). WHAT’S NEW The Dreadnaughtswillwork in a lot of new starters this season, but none more prominent than QB Tim Evans, who replaces the graduated Jarred Haggins, a three-year starter. RB Steward Butler also returns after a season at Oviedo High School, and DB D.J. Barnes likely will start at corner after transferring from Frostproof, where he also played quarterback. The progress of new starters on the offensive line, including Alex Nutting and Austin Collins, will be key for Lakeland this season. OFFENSIVEOUTLOOK Lakeland returns only three starters on off ense (WR Javares McRoy, OL Evan Goodman and OL Devin Goodman), though other projected starters such as WR Teddy Wright and FB Delvon Hagan saw plenty of playing time last season. The offense won’t change much, with Evans capable of still throwing the deep ball toMcRoy and possibly more accurate on shorter passes than Haggins was. Evans also can handle the option, and expectMcRoy to see more time in the backfi eld than last year coming off his 299-yard rushing performance in the spring game. UPCLOSE Head coach: Bill Castle (35th season, 336-75 overall). Coaching staff: Dan Talbot (DL), Jason Butler (LB), Kiako Lowery (DB), John Flath (OL), Danny Williams (RB), Will Bahler (WR), Deaubrey Devine (asst. LB), Ron Johnson (asst. DL). 2009 record: 13-1. Last time in playoffs: 2009, lost in state semifinals to Tampa Plant, 20-0. Homefield: Bryant Stadium, Lakeland. Roster: DB D.J. Alexander (5-10, 168, So.), TE Erick Andre (6-0, 201, Jr.), TE Ian Bacon (6-4, 182, Jr.), DB D.J. They’ll be among the favorites in Class 3A, along with Tampa Jefferson,Miami Booker T.Washington and defending champ Pensacola. Also in the mix will be the teamthat topped LakeWales for the 3A-9 district title last season: Winter Haven. The Blue Devils return a talented senior class themselves and won’t give up their district crown without a fight. But Kathleen, which missed out on last year’s postseason because of six forfeits tied to an ineligible player, could have the best shot at a state title among Polk teams. The Red Devils are fast, deep, skilled and hungry on defense, and their offense should be plenty explosive with three-year starter Isaac O’Neal back at quarterback. They’ll have to get through a tough district that includes a talented Lake Gibson squad, but this Kathleen teamhas a defi nite swagger to it that will be hard for opponents to overcome. On the way up this year are George Jenkins under fi rst-year coach Matt Thomp-son, Lake Region with new quarterback Geoff Bangley, and Ridge Community with dynamic athlete Karlos Williams. Some programs, like Teno-roc and Lakeland Christian, could have their best teams ever but not improve in the standings because the com-petition is so tough. So strap in and enjoy what should be one of the most exciting seasons in a while. DEFENSIVEOUTLOOK There are big holes to fill at linebacker after the departures ofWill Lucas (Purdue) and Quayshawn Nealy (Georgia Tech) from last season. “We’re not going to replace those guys,” Castle said. The secondary should be a strength with returning starters KareemGivens and PermanWilson, aswell as the addition of Barnes. Bryce Jones is the only returning starter at linebacker, while Demarco Gandy is the same on the line. DE Tedward Hamilton and DT Brent Oliver are set at two of the other defensive line positions, while T.J. Simmons mans one of the other linebacker spots, but Castle said much of the defense is open to competition. QUESTION MARK Despite having just seven returning starters overall, there aren’t many holes on the team. Off ensive line will be a question until the team’s three new starters prove they can handle the position, and there are still remaining starting spots open on the defensive line and at linebacker. BIGGEST STRENGTH Skill positionswill be strong again for Lakeland, with McRoy, Evans, Butler and Wright as good a grouping of QB, RB and WR in the county. Castle maintains that he doesn’t build his offense around one player, but McRoy truly can carry the Lakeland off ense to victories, especially with more touches from the backfield this season. NEXT LEVEL McRoy has committed to the University of Florida after decommitting fromTexas Tech. Wright has an offer from Marshall and also had strong discussions with Cincinnati, and Butler has an off er from West Virginia. More players, such as Givens, Barnes and Wilson, should get offers coming in as they put together solid senior seasons. QUOTABLE “People are really underrating us,” Evans said. … “I feel like there is more leadership this year and more chemistry,” Wright said. KEY GAME Nov. 12 at Kathleen. — BRANDTMERRITT | THE LEDGER THE EAGLESPROMISE THATA NEW ERA STARTS THIS YEAR. New head coach Matt Thompson has brought a new energy to the team’s football program. Among the players expected to lead are, fromleft, Jaucady Rutledge, Michael Wheary, Matt Fenlock, Jocobe Stafford and Logan Cochran. WHAT’S NEW “The Dude” abides at George Jenkins, and he means business. Matt Thompson is the new coach for the Eagles. He previously coached at Wildwood the past two years and built an 18-6 record. He’s looking to bring that winning mentality to the Eagles, and he believes he’s got the players to do it. “Everything is new formeand to them,” Thompson said. The attitude that Thompson is trying to instill is simple: Hit or be hit. He’s taken the attitude fromhis days as a linebacker atWestern Kentucky. “I can’t promise you what’s going to happen on the scoreboard, but you’re going to know we’re there,” Thompson said. OFFENSIVEOUTLOOK The Eagles lost a big part of their off ense with the graduation of BillyMuscatello. But with Muscatello being injured a majority of last year, it gave Jadrian Clarke valuable experience at quarterback. Thompson is planning on using that experience and combining diff erent looks with Jaucady Rutledge. The Eagleswill use a spread off ense with a no-huddle. Thompson wants them to snap the ball at least every 20 seconds, and not in game time, but actual time. “It’s going to be hard to personnel on us. It’s going to be hard to get a lot of diff erent defensive looks on us,” Thompson said. DEFENSIVEOUTLOOK Thompson is very excited about his defense this year. He said the team is taking to his plan very fast and that he’s been able to getmore in three to four weeks than in whole years at previous stops. The Eagles will predominantly use a 3-4 defense, but Thompson will shift to a 4-3, a 4-4 and even a 6-1 depending on the situation. One thing he is sure of is that the Eagleswill put a lot of pressure on the opposing quarterback. “We’re going to blitz everyone and anyone,” Thompson said. QUESTION MARK Inexperience. Thompson needs his sophomores and freshmen to grow up quickly if the Eagles are going to be successful. He’s got a lot of sophomores starting at key positions, and if they don’t excel, then it could be a long year. BIGGEST STRENGTH Leadership. Thompson is a firm believer that you don‘t win with players, you win with people. He feels he’s got several high-character people on the field and the sideline. “I‘m so proud toworkwithmy coaching staff. We just have some guys that have some phenomenal football IQ, and that rolls over to the players.” UPCLOSE HEADCOACH: Matt Thompson (1st season).
