POP NOIR DIY : Page 6
NICO SAAVEDRA POP NOIR’S LATIN RHYTHM SECTION Chilean Nico Saavedra was immersed in music and art from the day he was born. His dad, guitarist Juan Ramon, was a leading figure in a music scene driven underground during the dark days of the Pinochet dictatorship, and a stong influence on many bands that emerged following the end of the regime. Nico’s mother, Mizka, was a graphic artist, designing posters and record sleeves. At 18, Nico left Santiago to emigrate to California with his mother and younger brother, while his dad moved to India to become a sitar player in the country’s sacred temples, a privilege afforded to very fewWesterners, and one he still enjoys to this day. After college, Nico – who has played drums since he was 13 years old – joined latin alternative rockers Enjambre. The group’s debut album went on to receive three Univision Music Awards. During this time, he also worked as a production manager at JC Fandango, the premier latin venue in Southern California. When Pop Noir played there in 2006, he struck up a friendship and musical rapport with the McGarry brothers ... and when he left Enjambre later that year, he was immediately drafted into Pop Noir. Much in demand as a session musician in Los Angeles, he has also toured with the likes of latin stars Lucybell. 6
