DCDS Connection September/October : Page 2

September/October 2012 DcDS connection The Write Stuff am sure most of you watched at least some of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, officially the Games of the XXX Olympiad. At the closing ceremony, the United States boasted 46 gold, 29 silver and 29 bronze medals. We all witnessed some amazing performances by incredible athletes who conquered mind and body to achieve their goals. Probably the most valuable characteristic common to each of these incredible athletes was perseverance. Perseverance is characterized by a steady persistence in adhering to a specific course of action, a belief, or a purpose. This steadfastness in accomplishing a goal often makes the difference between success and failure in any effort whether it be setting a new Olympic record or succeeding in something a little less physical but equally important in our own personal and professional lives. I believe that a career in dentistry has many benchmarks to success and perseverance plays a valuable role in that success. While in dental school, I came across this quote that inspired me throughout my educational experience: I by Jacqueline M. Plemons, DDS, MS, President “That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do; not that the nature of the thing itself is changed, but that our power to do is increased.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson We persevered and by graduation, our “power to do” had definitely increased and we set our sights on different goals. Many entered dental practices where our goals were likely very similar and really boiled down to the desire to “do good.” An inner knowledge guided us in the belief that if we treated our patients well, success would follow. Today many continue to persevere in this goal despite sometimes unexpected challenges (i.e. changing economic times), recognizing the importance of maintaining high ethical standards along the way. It is truly a privilege to practice dentistry, and the trust our patients afford us is deserving of our perseverance. Whether your career in dentistry involves practice, research, academia, or even service in organized dentistry, perseverance will likely lead to amazing accomplishments. Dallas County Dental Society has many opportunities for service ranging from community outreach to committee involvement to hosting at the Southwest Dental Conference. Channel your perseverance — volunteer and take advantage of an opportunity to become the best version of yourself!
