ALUMS CONNECTING WITH ALUMS NORTHEASTERN TIES Mike Swenson, AS’09, and Matt Herron, AS’92, are now a creative team, thanks to the alumni directory and a little persistence on Swenson’s part. Herron says, “I didn’t have a job to fill at the time, but I liked the fact that Mike had the courage to do that—it showed what kind of employee he would be.” Swenson’s initiative paid off: Herron hired him as a production/executive assistant a few months later. Now the two work together in a studio overlooking Times Square, where they produce videos, graphics, music, and other media for Viacom. The pair also collaborated on an independent film, Audition , that Herron is directing this spring. “We have to know our company really well because we work with so many moving pieces,” Swenson says. “Every day is a different challenge, so it’s always fun to come to work.” Have a story to share about connecting with a fellow alum? Email us at magazine@neu.edu. MIKE SWENSON WAS A PRODUCTION ASSISTANT AT MTV, BUT DEVELOPING reality-TV shows wasn’t exactly his dream career. So he started poking around North-eastern’s online alumni directory, looking for fellow alumni who work at Viacom, which owns MTV. Sure enough, Swenson found Matt Herron, vice president and executive producer at Viacom Creative Services, a department Herron started building from scratch four-teen years ago. Swenson reached out to Herron in May 2010 through Facebook and set up an informational meeting. 16 Northeastern Magazine Spring 2012
