I remember telling people of my plans for starting Metro You Magazine and having them just stare at me like, “are you crazy? Metro You Magazine has been a dream of mine for over 8 years. I met my husband Bill while working in the publishing industry. I lived in Cedar Rapids Iowa and he was from the Detroit area. We actually met in Minnesota over spring break. I was there on vacation with my children and Bill was there for work. It didn’t take long for us to realize it was meant to be.
Fast forwarding 3 years, I found myself moving to Michigan to start my life with Bill. My two older children Brittney Savoy, now 25, and Andrew Savoy, now 22 were out of the house leading their own lives in Iowa. My two younger children, Jennie Savoy, now 19 and Reis Savoy, now 15 moved with me to Michigan to began our adventure. Bill and I were married in 2006. Bill has two incredible children Heather Galloway, now 22 and Chad Galloway, now 16. Together we have six children, yes we are a true Brady Bunch.
I came into the Detroit market working in radio ad sales. I was very successful at helping business owners with their marketing needs and advertising goals. However, when the economy started to turn, people became increasingly frustrated with the cost of advertising. They would say to me “Maria, are you crazy!? You want me to spend how much money on a 60 second ad that’s come and gone in hopes to reach my target market and you want me to run how many spots in a week for consistency? I can’t afford that!”
After hearing this time and time again, I decided to talk to my advertisers and potential advertisers to see what kind of advertising would be most effective for their business. Everyone that I spoke with agreed their target market was women; print ads drew attention because many people are visual; consistency matters and they needed to get their message or story out there for a longer period of time. They also needed a cost-effective way to do this. That is when I decided my idea for a women’s publication would be a great one. I surrounded myself with talented, wonderful like minded people and got to work.
I’m all about supporting Michigan and all it has to offer. It only made sense to me that to create a Michigan based publication, helping Michigan businesses, would be the right thing to do. How wonderful to be able to provide women with interesting and positive articles about fashion, good looks, health, fitness, home, travel, recipes and even horoscopes every month, make it free and have it be supported by advertisers. Helping local businesses by creating something people would look for and enjoy every month sure seemed like a good plan to me. That is when Metro You was created.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my family, though rewarding, this was not an easy venture. Their support has been unbelievable. If it had not been for the patience and encouragement of my family, this magazine would not be a success. My husband Bill and I have had many late night discussions about the direction and success of Metro You. My children have missed their mom many nights due to the publication. Their patience are unbelievable. I am blessed by the unconditional support and love of my husband and our children, Brittney, Andy, Heather, Jennie, Chad and Reis. You all give me the courage and faith to move onward and upward. Thank You
