ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT here is a pulse in Polk County. Even though times con-tinue to be financially tough for so many people and industries, some sec-tors are still alive and well. One of those sectors is the arts. From music to performing arts and ev-ery hand-crafted clay pot in between, the heartbeat of the arts in Polk and sur-rounding counties is growing stronger even though national reports continue to show that fewer people are attending movies and concerts the last few years. Meri Mass, executive director of the Polk Arts Alliance, said attendance has been up recently in Polk County muse-ums and arts centers . “It’s cheap entertainment that peo-ple can actually have a good time and don’t have to travel far,” Mass said. More residents are exploring new things in their back yard, arts officials say, and being pleasantly surprised at what they fi nd. “I think that we’re all happy to see people fi nd joy in the arts so that people seek out such a great thing,” said Sandy Horan, public relations and marketing manager at the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland. Each year, The Ledger celebrates the arts with a pullout guide to events throughout Central Florida. The pages are divided into Polk, Hillsborough, Pinellas and Orange/Osceola counties, complete with maps of many of the popular entertain-ment venues. Keep this guide handy; you might find something new that will make your heart beat with the same force as our local arts. — MATT REINSTETLE/The Ledger T THE LEDGER’S ANNUAL PULLOUT GUIDE PREVIEW INSIDE Polk Venues p10 Hillsborough Venues p20 Pinellas Venues p23 Orange and Osceola Venues p26
