Behe T he times, they are a changing and so should our businesses! Change may not come easy to any size firm, but there are seven principles every organization should follow to become a lean, mean, profitable machine. These seven principles can be adopted by businesses of any age or any size to improve their financial sustainability. 1. Plan, do, evaluate, revise. Why do responsive, flexible, profitable businesses plan? Because it helps them clearly identify their direction, purpose, methods, and goals. Writing them makes them tangible and more easily shared. Plans that are more easily shared have more consistent meaning among employees, suppliers, and customers. Take something as simple as a vision statement. Does your company have one? Flip through any industry magazine or visit a trade show if you want to see the amazing diversity of available heating solutions. It’s easy to get bogged down in the process of looking at all the possible technologies out there and get distracted from the main reason you are heating greenhouses in the first place – to have predictable production. When it comes to paying the fuel bill, the bottom line question all growers need to answer is really pretty simple: “For every dollar I spend in fuel, what do I get in return?” It would seem to be an easy question, but for most growers, especially those that operate multiple greenhouses from a central gas meter, getting the answer can be quite complex with many considerations.
