When John Fox was hired last month as the team’s new head coach, Saccomano asked Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, now VP of football operations for the Broncos, to Tweet the news to his legion of followers – creating huge buzz in the football and media worlds. Twitterology was nowhere – nowhere – on the horizon when Saccomano started working for the Denver Broncos in 1978. That was a year after the Broncos made their first of six trips to the Super Bowl – and Elway had yet to take his first snap at Stanford. Fans in those days read the Denver Post or Rocky Mountain News for player stats; controversies over online ticket sales, player unions and club seating lurked far in the future. Come kickoff time, they muted network TV broadcasters in favor of the rhythms of Bob Martin’s masterful play-by-play call on KOA Radio. Ticketmaster was in diapers, and loyal fans bought tickets, by and large, through the mail or by walking up to quaint wooden ticket booths. But whether buying “Orange Crush” memorabilia or soaking up another plastic-cup beer in the South Stands, fans cherished what felt like a one-on-one relationship with the hapless losers clad in vertical-striped stockings; with the team that shelled out cash for “Lend-Lease Jackie Lee” and gained legitimacy under the tutelage of “Half-a-Loaf Lou Saban.” Times change, and the one-on-one relationship with the fan – already largely an illusion by the 1970s – grew harder and harder to maintain. Still, on the heels of decades of NFL expansion and technological change, the Denver Broncos maintain a congenial stranglehold on the hearts and wallets of four generations of Coloradans.
