FHBA Elects New Leadership For 2009-2010

Second Vice President is the highest ranking leadership position for a nonbuilder member. James is a University of Florida Law School graduate and a member of the Tampa Bay Builders Association.

• First Vice President — Naples builder Al Zichella, of The Zichella Group, is a 23-year certified general contractor.

His development and consulting firm has projects in several Florida communities.

Zichella is a member of the Collier County Building Industry Association.

• Treasurer — Winter Haven professional engineer Dave Carter, owner of David C. Carter Consulting Engineers, has been active in the building industry for more than 25 years. He is a member of the Polk County Builders Association.

• Secretary — Port Charlotte pest control professional and state certified building contractor Suzanne Graham serves as FHBA Secretary. She is owner of American Pest Control Management and a strong advocate for Florida’s building community. She is a member of the Charlotte-DeSoto Building Industry Association.

• Third Vice President — Manatee plumbing contractor Bill Smock serves as Third Vice President. He is owner of Gator Plumbing in Bradenton and a member of the HBA of Manatee-Sarasota.

• Associate Vice President — Sarasota’s Bud Swindell, Vice President of the Lori Swindell Insurance Agency, will serve as Associate Vice President.

He has more than 30 years experience in the insurance industry and is a member of the HBA of Manatee-Sarasota.

• Immediate Past President — Punta Gorda builder Jay Carlson, who served as FHBA President from 2008-2009, is now the Immediate Past President. He is President of Carlson & Soforth and Director of Compliance and Warranty Standards for Bonded Builders Warranty Group. He is a member of the Charlotte-DeSoto BIA.

• Immediate Past Second Vice President — Sarasota’s Ted Brase, a Home Builder Specialist with Sherwin Williams for 20 years, now serves as Immediate Past Second Vice President.

He is a member of the HBA of Manatee- Sarasota.

FHBA’s 2009-2010 Senior Officers were sworn in to their new leadership positions on Friday, Oct. 30 during the association’s Fall Leadership Conference held at the Renaissance Vinoy in St. Petersburg.

Varian Named Florida Remodeler Of The Year

Naples remodeling professional William “Bill” Varian, CGR CAPS CGP was named the 2009 Remodeler of the Year by the FHBA during a ceremony held in St. Petersburg in conjunction with the association’s Fall Leadership Conference.

The Remodeler of the Year award is the highest ranking honor bestowed upon a remodeling professional within FHBA — a 10,000-corporate Member trade association. The award recognizes professional remodelers who have excelled in service to their industry, their association and their community.

Varian, owner of William J. Varian Construction Company, Inc. in Naples, is a 20-year home building and remodeling professional and holds three national remodeling designations. Earlier this year, Varian was named the Remodeler of the Month of May by the NAHB.

In addition to his membership with FHBA, Varian is a member of the Collier Building Industry Association where he is a founding member of the CBIA Remodeling Council and currently serves as Chair of the Council. With FHBA, Varian will Chair the FHBA-Remodelers Council for 2009-2010.

His remodeling efforts have been recognized with 8 Sand Dollar Awards for excellence and quality construction. He is a 2007 graduate of BUILD: Building University for Individual Leadership Development — a FHBA program. Varian mentor’s youth interested in the building industry by overseeing 800 students in three area Construction Academies and he has twice served as Chair of the Future Builders of America Leadership Training Summer Camp.

CBIA's Bill Wendle Joins FHBI Board

Florida Home Builders Insurance, the insurance and risk management subsidiary of the FHBA, has elected Collier BIA Executive Director Bill Wendle to its Board of Directors, according to an announcement from FHBI CEO Carolyn Littlefield.

“Bill Wendle brings a wealth of experience with association insurance programs to our Board,” said Littlefield, “as well as his important perspective as a local HBA executive officer.” Wendle took over as Collier’s executive officer last summer after serving 14 years as the Executive Director of the Wisconsin BA. His insurance-related experience includes leading WBA Insurance Services, the Wisconsin Homecare Organization and the State Medical Society of Wisconsin.

FHBI works with a network of more than 25 insurance carriers and 200 independent insurance agents who are HBA members to provide a wide range of products, including builders’ risk, general liability, workers compensation, surety and specialized, hard-to-find coverages.
