PRIZED POSSESSION WRITTEN BY ALLYSON HALPERN PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVE KEATING AND PATRICK BARTA FITTING THE CONTENTS OF AN 8,000-SQUARE-FOOT HOME INTO A CONDOMINIUM HALF THE SIZE IS NO EASY TASK. But it was a challenge that architect Cheryl Hughes, principal and owner of Seattle-based Hughes Studio Architects, accepted with pleasure. The owners, a couple who chose the Seattle apartment overlooking Lake Union to enjoy their retirement years, had two requirements: a view that revealed Washington’s picturesque water and mountain scenery, and an entertainment area suitable for them to continue hosting guests, whether large gatherings or intimate dinner parties. The living room’s 15-foot-high ceilings and abundance of windows answered the call, but the condominium’s original framework didn’t suit the owners’ lifestyle. Mirrored walls and black cloth wall covering reflected the previous owner’s tastes, so the couple had the apartment gutted to make it their own. “With the owners having downsized from a large home after the kids had grown, this residence needed to feel like their other house to make the transition smooth,” says Hughes, who has worked with the owners on three other projects over the last 15 years.
