Florida Gov. Charlie Crist led an all-star line-up of guest speakers during the FHBA’s Spring Legislative Conference held recently in Tallahassee.

Crist, House Speaker Larry Cretul, Sen. Mike Haridopolos and Rep.’s Gary Aubuchon and Anitere Flores each addressed conference attendees to highlight the many legislative issues they are addressing on behalf of FHBA members.

Growth management, impact fees, property tax reform, housing stimulus opportunities, workers comp insurance and streamlining the regulatory and permitting process are FHBA’s Top Legislative Priorities for the 2009 Legislative Session.

During the Spring Legislative Conference, members took the opportunity to gain an up-to-the-moment legislative briefing in preparation for visiting their lawmakers and advocating these priorities.

In addition to the intensive legislative briefing that took place during conference, FHBA provides a weekly online Legislative Update at www.fhba.com. Also, at the end of session, FHBA will produce the 2009 Legislative Report Card identifying how lawmakers voted on the association’s priority issues.

FHBA’s Spring Legislative Conference also provided members excellent educational opportunities through its Sales and Marketing Roundtable and Meet the Experts programs. A dynamic lineup of sales and marketing professionals and a diverse grouping of industry topics like Remodeling for Energy Efficiency; Diversification: Home Builder to Commercial Builder; Workers Comp Q&A and Florida Building Code Update were among the many offerings.

While members were in Tallahassee, they took time to honor FHBA’s own Barry Rutenberg, the Gainesville builder who was recently elected as Third Vice Chairman of the NAHB. In addition to a fun-filled celebration at the Florida Housing Center, Rutenberg received well wishes from NAHB leadership.

“Since the elections at the International Builders Show, this Team of Officers has had some monumental challenges. Barry has moved into his new position seamlessly,” said Joe Robson, NAHB Chairman of the Board. “Overnight, he has become an integral part of the Senior Officer Team. Congratulations Barry and thank you for your contributions so far.”

The three-day conference also allowed members to attend various FHBA committee and council meetings, attend a welcome reception kicking off the 2009 Spring Legislative Conference and for new members, participate in a special luncheon.

A special thanks to each of you that traveled to Tallahassee to participate. The great work from members like you is helping to ensure lawmakers hear our voices. Your dedication to the association and Florida’s housing industry is greatly appreciated.

If you haven’t already done so, start making plans now to attend FHBA’s next conference held in conjunction with the Southeast Building Conference, July 30 to Aug. 1, 2009 in Orlando. To learn more, visit www.sebcshow.com.
