DESIGN AWARDS | contemporary architecture under 4,000 square feet 1 st BUREAU FOR ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM An urban cottage in the woods, this beauty was built according to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. Note the five sides, raised on a concrete plinth. Called a “match-box” style, the home’s concept is that of an external sleeve with four inner quadrants (tongue-and-groove cedar). The house is much smaller than the average American home; it has four bedrooms but is only 1,740 square feet. An ingenious creation, to be sure. 2 3 nd rd VISBEEN ARCHITECTS YOUNG & YOUNG ARCHITECTS, WITH HOMES WITH DISTINCTION 122 Detroit Home | Spring 2013 VISBEEN ARCHITECTS PHOTOGRAPH BY WILLIAM J.
