But Charles Franklin has made polling trends exciting, espe-cially in these heady political times. Franklin, a professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is currently a visiting professor of law and public policy at Marquette University Law School. As the co-creator of Pollster.com (sold to the Huffington Post in 2010) and the developer of the Marquette University Law School Poll, he has become a sought-after nonpartisan expert commentator on political trends for local, state and national elections. “We’ve been doing monthly polls at Marquette since January on all of the politi-cal races in the state. Ours is one of the few nonpartisan polls and we offer complete disclosure of our methodology, which is also rare,” Franklin says. “Historians will want to look back at this period in the future because recall elections are so rare, and by producing this data, we are trying to provide some of that information.” Franklin, who was born in Pennsylvania and attended college in Alabama and grad-uate school at the University of Michigan, has had a love affair with statistics since elementary school. “I did my first survey at the age of 10 for a science fair,” he says. “The beauty of polls is they are a way to find out what the citizenry thinks about public policy.
